The apostle Paul's warning to the early church (and us) is that we would have trouble with evil people and persecution as we live for the truth of the gospel. We are called to persevere in faith and rely on Scripture to stand firm! Just as Timothy followed Paul's excellent example, so are we to follow in their footsteps.
